I thought about getting a luggage tracker but decided against it because I usually travel with a carry-on and a backpack so both are usually within proximity of my seat. However, I do carry my cables/chargers/adapters, medication, personal hygiene stuff like a toothbrush and one set of clothing in my backpack in case I change my mind and check in my carry-on. I keep the more valuable items in my backpack. I won't feel so bad if my carry-on gets lost.

Hey Rafael, a nicely sorted vid for those of short travel or long travel if with set up destinations. Do watch the white charger at 18:18.. It has a bent prong with a small crack which can lead to a shock especially with the high voltage from there, even sweaty hands can create contact. (Not saying you have sweaty hands :) But for those humid days and nights it might lead to a hot spot. Time to through it away my man.I met you at Dona Beer briefly the night before I left back to the US. Hope to meet again when we return every year. Ken

Very helpful video. I am unclear on whether you bring a laptop or not. You said you don't, but then you have all these computer accessories that you bring with you. I feel more complete traveling with a small Macair laptop, but always am concerned about it getting damaged. Your take on this? Other issues include virtual SIM cards, and hard sided versus soft sided luggage.

I normally only travel with a phone and tablet with a keyboard case. I mostly use the pouch for charging accessories. It just depends on the trip. Sometimes I only travel with a phone. And yes esims are definitely worthwhile. But that’s a whole topic on its own. But when it comes to protecting a laptop I personally would prefer a rigid case/sleeve that I’d be able to put into a backpack. I’ve had harshell backpacks before and while they work, they end up feeling more bulky than necessary.

Would say it is better to try to build a nest egg of savings before living in Europe. Most sustainable approach is to try to find some skilled employment there first if you're in your 30's. These are the prime working years that you are able to save for the future. Then try to buy some real estate there and you're set - - no more paying rent.

Is it not just like you say you are amarican from the United States, when people ask this question, they are not asking for family history they are more or less asking you where did you grow up. For example I am Irish I was born and raised in Ireland, my mothers Irish and my dad was born and raised in New Zealand. If some one asked me where am I from, I would reply with “I am Irish” any if my father was brought up or any other questions relating to my family’s origin, then I would tell them about my kiwi (New Zealand) heritage. I just feel that when some one ask you where you are from, you tell them where you live or have lived not what you heritage is. Yes respect your heritage and have joy for it, but just tell me when your from not your family’s origin!

    • @h4rrykelly209

All I know is I had a permanent smile the whole year I was in Europe. The problem was, doing business is so hard when it doesn't come naturally as it does in my home country. It's FOREIGN land with FOREIGN etiquette and FOREIGN laws. Not easy to navigate!! (And I know the language) I'd also like to add the female aspect. Not many female protection laws like there is in Canada so there's a safety aspect as well that was questionable at times. Men ask you openly for sex. In Canada it's not like that in my experience men will ask you out first and be a bit more flirty, then they try to make a move but women generally have the upper hand so men are more careful in the way they handle women. In Europe they're blunt. It was a bit off putting. Try navigating that when you're not used to it!! It was exhausting and I'm 53. So I was suprised it was a minefield. Other than that, I would rather be there and married. They seem to leave the wives alone.

Don't you see, he's not talking about how hard it is to get to the airport! He's saying that the frequency of service to certain European countries is not at as good a level in Portugal as is the service from some cities of Europe, ie. Paris, London, Rome etc. So even if you're willing to take a train for two hours, the flights are not always available every day. Myself, I recall waiting in customs at the Lisbon airport for 3hrs, along with hundreds of other people, not great customer service...

The "generally you do have higher wages in the north" is quite a risky claim to make. We do have national contracts and they are the same North and South, they don't take in consideration that the costs of living is higher in the north. So if you're going to work in big companies or the industry, you may have a better living standard in the South. But things are worse in the small business in the South, where many work with shady contracts and work rules.

The Netherlands has an advantage for expats: - Expats receive a tax-free allowance of up to 30% of their salary for 5 years. They receive this compensation up to a maximum amount of € 233,000 per year. - 95% of Dutch people speak English. (German and French are also taught in Dutch schools). - Low unemployment rate of about 3%. Many Dutch companies have difficulty finding staff in all sectors. There are on average 100 candidates for 150 vacancies. - Central location in North West EU with excellent short flight routes and high speed trains to neighboring countries as far as London. - Work life balance. The Netherlands has the largest part-time workforce of all Western countries. About 49% of Dutch employees work part-time, or less than 30 hours per week. - Paid vacation of a minimum of 4 weeks per year, but can be up to 6 weeks or more. What is common in the Netherlands is to have three to four weeks off during the summer, a week in the autumn and a week around Christmas. - In case of illness workers are continue to be paid 70% of the normal salary. Continued payment in the event of illness is a maximum of two years. - You mention about compulsory Dutch health insurance. Dutch health insurance costs an average of €150-€175 per month. This health insurance covers all medical and dental costs. It seems expensive, but the average expat salary in 2024 is €5,762 per month, €1,440 per week or €37.91 per hour. The downside is that the new Dutch government wants fewer migrants, such as refugees but also migrant workers and expats. There are approximately 800,000 temporary foreign workers in the Netherlands. The plan is that Dutch universities have to becoming Dutch again. About 70% of Dutch universities are taught in English. This attracts many foreign students, so much so that 60% of first-year university students in the Netherlands are foreigners. After the foreign students have graduated, they stay in the Netherlands and start working to benefit from the Expat tax benefit for five years. I expect that the new laws to allow fewer migrant workers will be introduced in a year or a year and a half. The government has nothing against migrant workers, but it is more about the fact that the Netherlands currently has a housing crisis.

The 10,000 native English speakers here are not the reason your salary is so awful. Your salary is awful because you are passive and meek as a lamb and you don’t demand more.

Portugal just is not an industrial powerhouse as is Italy. And so compared to Italy, it's fair to say Portugal is relatively poor. But compared to other countries it is rich in many ways. The poorer the country, the infrastructure is lower grade, and it is harder to get things done, and wages are low. For some people, especially older ones, this environment is too challenging. So those that can afford it may want to pass on Portugal, and should not be subject to presumptious sociological labelling for expressing their preference.

@@stevemitchell7839 Portugal is rich in passivity and it's inability to stand up to Bureacrats and Oligarchs that have drained this nation like vampires. Zeca Afonso warned us about this. We traded a dictatorship for an Oligarchy. Whatever else Portugal offers is only offered to those wealthy enough to enjoy it or to tourists coming to visit from other countries. The Italians, the French and virtually any other Western EU country WOULD NOT TOLERATE the situation as it exists in Portugal right now. An average wage of 800 EURO per month while the average rent is well over 1,000E per month. The Portuguese are Slaves.
